Accessing Academic Language Through Multicomponent Word Work -- Grade 4 and Up

Overview

A three-part series from The Morphology Kit® Professional Learning Series, designed to be taken in order. Together these courses move from why older students struggle with academic text, to what instructors need to know about word structure, to how to teach it in a repeatable classroom routine.

Students who read well in the early grades often stall once academic text becomes longer, more abstract, and morphologically complex. The problem is rarely decoding alone — it's that pronunciation, spelling, word structure, meaning, and syntax have never been taught as connected systems. This series builds that integrated approach from the research base up to the lesson plan.

Participants will leave with a clear rationale, the word-structure knowledge to teach morphology confidently, and a flexible instructional routine they can use with any word family.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn how to:

  • Explain why capable decoders often struggle with the language demands of academic text after third grade.
  • Integrate phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, and semantics within word-level instruction.
  • Identify morphemes, bases, affixes, and connecting vowels within complex academic vocabulary.
  • Use word meaning and word relationships to support spellings that pronunciation alone cannot explain.
  • Teach Tier 2 academic vocabulary through morphological word families rather than isolated word lists.
  • Apply a complete, repeatable instructional routine that moves students from word analysis to authentic reading and writing.
