Structured literacy · Grades 4 and up

Long words are built from small, meaningful parts. Teach students to see them.

Welcome to The Morphology Kit®, created by Sound Literacy Solutions. We offer professional learning and resources for instructors and parents teaching structured literacy to students in grades 4 and up, with a focus on morphology.

Our flagship resource

The Morphology Kit® Latin Progression

A comprehensive course of lessons and activities featuring high-utility Latin morphemes, designed to build morphological awareness in students in grade 4 and up. Each lesson builds on the last, with review built in.

Explore The Latin Progression

01

Five sets, ten lessons each

Every Morpheme Lesson focuses on a single Latin morpheme, such as the base element PORT, so students master one meaningful unit at a time.

02

A Core Lesson, then practice

An instructor-led Core Lesson is followed by word chains, segmenting, word building, sorting, matching, word families, morpheme scrambles, and connected text.

03

Ready to teach tomorrow

PowerPoint and PDF files with an Instructor Guide and Answer Keys. Digital game versions of the activities are also available.

The approach

Built on The Morphology Kit® Framework

A research-based instructional approach that integrates morphology, phonology, orthography, semantics, and syntax into cohesive, explicit, multicomponent lessons. Students meet high-utility morphemes again and again, in meaningful ways, to strengthen vocabulary, spelling, and automatic word recognition.

Why teach morphology? →
  • MorphologyThe meaningful parts of words
  • PhonologyThe sounds in words
  • OrthographyHow words are spelled
  • SemanticsWhat words mean
  • SyntaxHow words work in sentences

What families and educators are saying

The Morphology Kit has been truly life-changing for my son and our family… After consistent instruction with the Morphology Kit, he is now reading with confidence. He actively tackles complex, multisyllabic words and is even spelling better than he had expected.

My dyslexic fifth grader has benefited tremendously from working with Mary. The morphology-based learning has given her skills that apply not only to reading and writing English, but other languages, and science and math too. It’s a fundamental approach to learning that I haven’t seen taught outside of college-level classes.

“Today I used some of your suggestions about morphemes with a boy I tutor… I presented it similarly to the way you had it in various slides, both his reading words and spelling them, AND… he did absolutely fabulously! He and I and his mother were so happy.”
